Avon chub

Fishing on the majestic Hampshire Avon is always a real pleasure and the lovely Britford stretch near Salisbury is certainly one of my favourite places to spend a few hours casting into various likely looking spots.

Having fished around Ringwood and the famous Royalty fishery in Christchurch many times over the years, the Avon at Britford  is a new venue to me. Having been introduced to the stretch by a friend last season, I’ve already had some memorable sessions there; a brace of 2lbs grayling on one November afternoon and a pair of chunky chub to cheespaste on a freezing March day.

My latest visit coincided with a spectacular downpour after days of hot weather and the fresh water entering the river stirred the big chub into feeding. A lovely brace of fish fell to my ledgering tactics, with a 4lbs 5oz fish falling to a maggot feeder approach, followed by a great battle with this pellet tempted 5 pounder.
